Pleasant Camp/Dalton Cache

According to Chilkat Elder Joe Hotch, it was the Chilkats who pushed the Canadians to establish their border station near 42-mile in 1902. The Canadian army tried to establish the border at the Chilkat River near Klukwan, but the chief of Klukwan resisted their presence, sending them farther up the valley to 42-mile, where they established Pleasant Camp [3]. The former U.S. Customs building – later a roadhouse and a restaurant – is still standing, although in considerable disrepair. Built by Jack Dalton as his original “Dalton Trail Post,” it is a designated Historic Site. The new U.S. Customs station is nearby. [5]
