The Chilkoot pass held an important trade route to the interior, which was owned and maintained by the Lukaax̱.ádi clan. The Lukaax̱.ádi leader, L’unaat’, fought and died to defend his clan’s right to manage use of the Chilkoot trail which started at Dayéi and went north over the pass to allow trade with interior peoples.
