Dayeisáank’i (Little Dayei Cove)

Dayeisáank’i is in reference to the large body of water now known as Taiya Inlet.  Taiya is an interpretation of the  Tlingit word Dayéi (translated “to pack”) which refers to the packing village at the head of that inlet.  Dayeisáank’i offered safe harbor to canoes traveling north and signaled that Dayéi village was, “Just right over there…towards Skagway…The opposite side of Dayéi, that’s what Dayeisáank’i refers to.” [6]. It has been long used to gather fish, and to hunt mountain goats and seal. Though, because it is hard to access it has evaded permanent settlement [20].
